INNER CITY JUNIOR WESMEN
All children should have the opportunity to play in sport and recreation programs and know what it feels like to belong to a team within a safe and supportive environment.
The University of Winnipeg Athletics Department has embraced the concept of community learning and through an active outreach program, has created distinct inner city teams for multiple sports. It has also embraced meaningful partnerships with neighbourhood organizations such as Spence Neighbourhood Association and the Youth Agencies Alliance with a shared goal of realizing the needs and aspirations of inner city youth.
CONNECTING TO COMMUNITY
Many of the children and teenagers who join our teams are new immigrants facing language and financial barriers and Indigenous youth. We create a respectful and inclusive environment for all. Wesmen athletes, staff and coaches are strong supporters of the inner city initiative and volunteer countless hours to ensure the program’s success.
The Inner City Junior Wesmen teams are popular and growing. Participation for neighbourhood youth is free, This is only possible with the help of generous donors. We actively seek partners who share our vision and want to contribute to creating a stronger inner city for everyone, whether it is through time, money, equipment or sponsorship.
The Inner City Junior Wesmen now attracts 300 neighbourhood children with teams for both boys and girls. Sport options include basketball, soccer and wrestling. Over the next several years the goal is to add flag football, baseball, volleyball, track and field and golf and double the number of youth participating, as resources allow.
A NEW HOME FOR COMMUNITY TEAMS
Through the generous support of the Province of Manitoba, City of Winnipeg, and The University of Winnipeg Students' Association, The University of Winnipeg has built the most significant health and recreation complex of its kind in the inner city. UWinnipeg'’s multi-sport UNITED Health & RecPlex will help alleviate the chronic shortage of indoor recreational space in Winnipeg, enhance the UWinnipeg student experience and offer neighbourhood youth and residents unsurpassed recreational opportunities and new health services.

The state of the art, indoor green space will accommodate a multitude of sports such as soccer, flag football and track and field, as well as cultural and community events. It will be open to students and the community in fall 2014.
